People today meet and communicate very differently than they did thirty years ago. In the past, staying in touch required being physically present. Children spent all their free time playing with friends in the yard, and adults would drop by each other’s homes without warning or spend hours talking on the phone. Letters from relatives and loved ones took weeks to arrive, and getting any news was a real event. Now everything is completely different. The digital space has become the main place for meeting and communicating. More and more people choose online communication instead of meeting in person.

Digital etiquette: new rules of communication

Technology and the internet have changed the way we stay connected. What used to be normal can now cause confusion or even irritation. Here’s what has changed:

    • Messengers have replaced phone calls. For most people, it’s easier to send a dozen messages than to make a call. More than that, an unexpected call without prior notice is often seen as crossing personal boundaries.
    • Voice messages have appeared. This format has firmly taken root in our lives, even though it provokes a lot of debate. People usually record them “on the go,” when they don’t have time to type long texts. But out of respect for personal boundaries, it’s better to ask first if the other person is okay with listening to a voice message.
    • Social networks have become a place where we watch other people’s lives. Today, you don’t have to meet in person to find out what’s going on with someone. It’s enough to scroll through your Instagram feed — many people share important life events there. Likes and reactions to Stories have become a way to remind others you exist and to show a friendly attitude.
    • Emojis have become a new language of emotions. No online chat happens without them, because they’re basically the only way to express feelings on the internet. Many people are now so used to emojis that a message without a single smiley and with a period at the end can feel cold or even passive‑aggressive.

Our preference for online communication didn’t appear out of nowhere. Psychologically, it’s easier to feel in control when we interact online, especially through text. We can think over our reply, edit what we’ve written, or even put the phone aside if we’re not ready to talk. People have also started to value their time much more. Long, aimless phone conversations are fading into the past, giving way to short, to‑the‑point messages.

At the same time, communication is becoming more superficial. When we talk only in text, our conversations often lack depth. Text doesn’t carry nonverbal signals like gestures, facial expressions, and tone of voice. Of course, emojis can help set the right tone for a message. But it still can’t compare to in‑person interaction, when you actually see the person in front of you.

Video chat: bridging the gap between online and offline

Another form of communication that’s now as popular as social networks and messengers is online chat. The first services appeared in the late 2000s. Platforms like Omegle and Chatroulette quickly gained huge audiences. Thousands of users logged in every day to meet and talk with strangers. But due to poor moderation, these platforms developed a questionable reputation. You could never predict who would appear on the other side of the screen — an interesting chat partner or someone behaving inappropriately.

Still, the idea of live face‑to‑face communication appealed to a massive number of people. That’s why the first random video chats soon got alternatives. One of them is the CooMeet video chat with girls. One of the main advantages of this service is high‑quality moderation. The team carefully monitors what’s happening to keep the atmosphere pleasant and safe, and any user who breaks the rules is blocked immediately. In addition, all girls are required to register and verify their details. This way, you can always be sure that the person on the other side of the screen is really a girl, not a fake account. Another plus: CooMeet has a gender filter, so users connect only with people of the opposite sex.

Today, millions of people around the world use videochats. And it’s no surprise, because these platforms have a lot of advantages:

    • Our brain perceives video communication almost like real‑life interaction. We see and hear the other person in real time, notice their facial expressions and reactions. Nonverbal signals make conversations more emotionally rich and meaningful. Thanks to this, we open up and get closer to each other much faster.
    • There’s a lower risk of being misled in a random chat. Almost everyone has had a situation where, in person, someone turned out to be very different from their online photos or messages. In video chats, there are no filters or masks, so you see the other person as they really are — and can decide whether you’d like to meet them offline.
    • Video communication helps fight loneliness. Online chats erase geographical boundaries. If you don’t currently have the opportunity to meet people in person, you can make up for the lack of communication in a cam chat. You can choose the country, language, gender, and interests — and find someone you’ll definitely have something to talk about with.

Modern communication formats are nothing like they used to be. Technology has made our lives easier by giving us incredible freedom: at any moment, we can connect with almost anyone and find a soulmate anywhere in the world. At the same time, total digitalization has its downsides. One of them is the illusion of closeness. We can have hundreds of online “friends” and constantly be chatting with someone — and still feel lonely. Constant online presence also keeps the brain from fully resting, which leads to chronic fatigue and a lack of desire to communicate at all. That’s why it’s so important not to let gadgets completely take over your life. The most meaningful things still happen beyond the screen.
